~ In-game Description for the Poleaxe

Poleaxe is a weapon class in Conqueror's Blade.

Overview[ | ]

The poleaxe is a two-handed polearm focused around dealing large amounts of control effects against both units and heroes. Poleaxe users can easily and effectively stun units in a large AoE and also duel well against most other hero weapon classes, but have low mobility and slow attack animations.

Acquisition[ | ]

The poleaxe can be unlocked in the skills page of the Character tab (default key P, top right) for 5 skill points once the player reaches level 15. Once unlocked, the level 1 versions of all poleaxe skills will become available and can then be upgraded further for more skill points. Poleaxe weapon skills can be used simply by equipping any poleaxe, but like all weapons only 4 skills including up to 1 paragon (yellow-coloured) skill can be used at a time, customizable through the skills page.

Poleaxes are classed for heavy armour. This means that poleaxe users can wear any mix of light, medium, or heavy armour and still be allowed to use a poleaxe. However, it is recommended for players to use the heaviest armour they can equip for the additional defenses.

Tips[ | ]

Skill Selection[ | ]

  • Push Back and Weapon Dance are near-mandatory skills for any poleaxe user. The former removes and inflicts control effects in one ability, making it a staple skill against heroes, and the latter deals out a wide-ranging AoE control effect that cannot be blocked, buffs the poleaxe user, and debuffs enemies, making it extremely useful against units.
  • Both Rough Justice and Lochaber Strike are excellent paragon skills. Rough Justice is great against lone heroes, as it inflicts winded which cannot be removed by any weapon skill and grants poleaxe users a burst of mobility which they ordinarily lack, but has little applicability in other situations. Lochaber Strike is much more versatile; it still inflicts a long series of control effects, but is also good against units and can remove control effects. As such, the majority of players tend to prefer using Lochaber Strike over Rough Justice.
  • The other poleaxe weapon skills can be chosen more freely:
    • The Old Billhook is a popular choice for its knockdown effect on a low cooldown.
    • Bec de Corbin deals damage in a good AoE, so it has great applicability against units.
    • Grim Harvest removes control effects and damages block to a great degree, but be aware of its slow attack speed and poor AoE.
    • Halberdier's Thrust is unpopular due to its poor AoE and lack of control effects.

Equipment & Attribute Builds[ | ]

  • When using a poleaxe, it's recommended to put character skill points into toughness to further boost defenses. Putting points into strength to further boost damage is another viable option.
  • As most of a poleaxe's damage is slashing damage, it's advised to aim for slashing damage and slashing armour penetration when reforging a poleaxe.
  • The Guardsman set is the standard armour choice for poleaxe users, being the heavy armour set that is built out of the Rare Armour Schematic. For those looking to commit to using the poleaxe long term, the Fearless Paladin set is an incredible upgrade and is widely considered to be the best amongst all armour sets in the game.

Gameplay[ | ]

  • The poleaxe is considered to be one of the strongest weapon classes due to its very high capability to deal out control effects and the ability to equip heavy armour while still boasting respectable damage. However poleaxe users have little in the way of mobility and range.
  • As poleaxe animations are slow, it's more important than ever to animation cancel by either rolling or using skills. For example, a poleaxe user can use The Old Billhook and then cancel the animation directly after dealing damage by rolling, allowing the user to follow up immediately with another skill or a sprinting attack.
  • Weapon Dance and Lochaber Strike are great skills to stop charging cavalry and disrupt units in general.
  • A poleaxe user can change the direction of Lochaber Strike simply by moving the camera, which among other things allows them to stun enemies coming from different directions.

Playing Against Poleaxe[ | ]

  • As Lochaber strike deals control effects using multiple different hits, it's possible for some weapon classes to escape the skill or stun the poleaxe user even when caught by this ability, particularly before the final hit which has a longer delay than the other hits.
